Activities of the St. Augustine Social Service Society, Kumily. Augustinian Sisters started in India in the year of 1968 in Kumily, to take care of the sick and needy of the area.  In 1973 we registered St. Augustine Social Service Society to establish our activities for the good of the poor people who need help. We are engaged mainly in taking care of the sick, children and elderly; educate the girls with professional training such as nursing training, teachers training etc.

In the beginning stage, in Kumily there was no proper healthcare facilities. Sisters used to go with Mobile Clinic to the villages to take care of the sick. Sisters were also visiting the families in the remote villages of Kumily, Vandiperiyar and the surroundings. Through the visiting of the Villages and mobile clinic services, sisters felt the need of our presence at Anavilasam. Hence we started St. Joseph’s Dispensary and a small convent there with  three sisters. We also started a Nursery school for the small children, which is functioning even today. Unfortunately we had to close down the dispensary due to the new rules of government, as we did not have permanent doctor there.

We started educating girls to do the Home nursing services in association with the Red Cross. Four years it functioned well, many girls from poor families could get job and help themselves and their families.

In 2006 we were asked to open a home for the girls, whose parents are in the prison. We started this home with 6 girls and soon the number of the girls increased. In the year 2009 we got the Government registration for the Orphanage. This is known as today “Jeevan Jyothi”. At present we are having 25 girls from different areas of Kerala, whose one or the other parent is in prison. Some of these girls are psychologically affected and they need constant care and counseling. Besides this we have two more centers: one at Karavaloor, in Kollam district, known as “Karunalayam” for girls and the other at Aduvasserry, in Ernakulam district for boys, known as “Snehadhan.” The children in our centers are of prisoners, broken families, those abused sexually, rejected by the parents, children of HIV affected parents etc. All three centers are registered under the Board of Control for Orphanages Kerala and we got the recognition too. Our Centers have inspection more than once every year from this Board and also they check our accounts. They have promised to help us in getting grant from the government, and we have applied for all these three homes. We educate the children according to their aptitude, talents and abilities. Some of the girls are settled after their professional training such as TTC, Nursery Training, paramedical course etc. All their expenses are met by St. Augustine Social service Society, Kumily.

We are happy and grateful that we could rehabilitate these children so that they may find acceptance in the society and become responsible Citizens.

We help financially the families of our neighborhood who are in financial crisis to send their girls married.

At present our Sisters are engaged in 9 Stations and giving our services to the children, orphans, medical care and guidance and formation of  youth in their insecurities specially the young women.

We meet all their expenses with the support of local benefactors and a main source of support is St. Augustine Social Service Society, Kumily.
